We’re a genuinely local school. Our office is on Alfreds Way in neighbouring Barking, a few minutes down the A124 from Ilford, and our instructors spend their working week on Ilford’s roads – the same roads the Goodmayes examiners use. You won’t be booked through a call centre and passed to whoever’s free: you get one DVSA-approved instructor who plans your learning around you and stays with you until you pass.
Every instructor is an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI), registered and checked by the DVSA – patient with first-timers, and experienced with learners back for a second or third attempt.
Goodmayes test routes run through the roads we teach on daily: the A118 through Ilford, Cranbrook Road, the A12 Eastern Avenue, and the Gants Hill roundabout.

Ilford is a demanding but brilliant place to learn, because it packs most of the driving test’s challenges into a couple of square miles. The Gants Hill roundabout teaches lane discipline better than any diagram. The A118 through Ilford town centre is buses, bus lanes, pedestrian crossings and box junctions in quick succession. Cranbrook Road and Ilford Lane build your speed-management and observation skills, and the A12 Eastern Avenue gets you comfortable at dual-carriageway speeds before test day. Learners who train here don’t get surprised by their test – they’ve already driven the hard parts, week in, week out.
We teach across the whole Ilford area, including Seven Kings, Goodmayes, Gants Hill, Newbury Park, Barkingside, Cranbrook and Clayhall, with pick-up from home, college or work.
A manual licence covers every car you’ll ever own or hire. You’ll start with clutch control and the biting point on Ilford’s quieter residential streets, then build up to junctions, the busier A-roads, and multi-lane roundabouts as your confidence grows. Stalling at the lights on Cranbrook Road is a rite of passage – our instructors have coached hundreds of learners through it.
No clutch and no gears means all of your attention goes on observation, positioning and planning – which is exactly what Ilford’s busy roads demand, and why many learners feel test-ready sooner in an automatic. It’s a strong choice if nerves or previous stop-start attempts have held you back. Worth knowing: an automatic licence limits you to automatic cars, though with every electric car being automatic, that restriction matters less each year.

Ilford learners are in an unusually good position: your nearest test centre – Goodmayes, 98 Goodmayes Road, Ilford, IG3 9UZ – is in Ilford itself, so the roads you learn on are the roads you’ll be tested on.
One thing to plan for: since the DVSA closed the Barking (Tanner Street) test centre on 3 January 2026, learners from Barking and Dagenham have shifted to Goodmayes too, and test slots there are in higher demand than they used to be. Book your test early once your instructor says you’re close to ready – you choose your centre and date when you book on GOV.UK. Wanstead and Hendon are solid alternatives if Goodmayes has no dates that work for you, and we prepare learners for those routes as well.
On the manoeuvres, slow right down. Most learners rush the reverse because they worry about holding other cars up, and that is when the observations slip. Take your time, keep the car creeping, and give yourself space to look properly.

Since the Barking (Tanner Street) centre closed in January 2026, Goodmayes has become busier, so it’s worth booking your test on GOV.UK as soon as your instructor says you’re close to ready. Wanstead and Hendon are good alternatives, and we cover those routes too.
The DVSA’s guideline is around 45 hours of professional lessons plus 22 hours of private practice. Complete beginners often need a little more; learners with experience, less. Your instructor will give you an honest steer after a lesson or two, and the app shows you exactly where you stand.

Manual gives you a licence for any car. Automatic is often quicker to learn and ideal if you’ll only drive automatics – including electric cars, which are all automatic. We offer both and can help you decide.
