Our office sits on Alfreds Way in Barking, about ten minutes down the A124 from Goodmayes. That matters more than it sounds. The roads between the two, Longbridge Road, Green Lane, Barley Lane, the A118 High Road, are the roads Goodmayes examiners actually use. We are on them every day, so your lesson time and your test time are spent in the same traffic.
Plenty of national schools take your booking through a call centre and hand you to whoever has a gap that week. You get one instructor here, and you keep them until you pass.
Every instructor is a registered Approved Driving Instructor (ADI), checked and graded by the DVSA. Patient with complete beginners, and used to learners coming back for a second or third attempt.
Barley Lane roundabout, the Seven Kings junction, the A12 Eastern Avenue slip roads and the bus lanes along the A118. These are the parts of a Goodmayes test that catch people out, and they are where we spend your lesson time.

A manual licence covers every car you will ever own, borrow or hire. You will start with clutch control and the biting point on the quieter roads around Seven Kings, then build up to the busier A-roads and the multi-lane roundabouts once the car stops feeling like a machine you are fighting. Stalling at the lights on Green Lane happens to almost everyone. Our instructors have coached hundreds of learners through that exact week.
No clutch and no gear changes means your full attention goes to observation, positioning and forward planning. On roads as busy as Goodmayes Road and the A118, that is a real advantage, and it is why plenty of learners reach test standard sooner in an automatic. Worth knowing before you commit: an automatic licence only allows you to drive automatic cars. With every electric car being automatic, that limit shrinks a little each year.

The waiting room is on the first floor, up two flights of stairs. If you have a mobility impairment, the DVSA will arrange to meet you in the car park instead, and you should flag any access needs when you book rather than on the day.
The reason the DVSA gave is the useful part, and almost nobody explains it to learners.
Barking closed because its routes had stopped meeting DVSA testing standards in two specific ways. The centre had lost access to the nearby car parks examiners used for bay parking and forward parking exercises. And the surrounding traffic had become congested enough that examiners could no longer reliably see candidates driving at higher speeds.
Read that back and you can see exactly what your Goodmayes preparation needs to cover.
Bay parking is properly back on the table. If you trained for Tanner Street, your manoeuvre practice may have leaned heavily on parallel parking and pull-up-on-the-right, because the car park exercises were not always available. At Goodmayes, treat all of them as live and get comfortable reversing into a bay under time pressure with people walking past.
You need real dual carriageway hours. The A12 Eastern Avenue runs north of the test centre, and joining, holding lane position and exiting at 40 to 50mph appears on a large share of Goodmayes routes. Barking routes rarely gave learners that. If your last few lessons were all 20 and 30mph streets, that gap will show.
Your local knowledge has not gone to waste. Alfred’s Way, Longbridge Road and the Barking Northern Relief Road all appear on Goodmayes route mapping. You are not starting from zero. You are extending east.

Goodmayes is a genuinely demanding place to learn, which is a good thing when your test starts and finishes here. The mix inside a couple of square miles covers most of what an examiner needs to see.
Goodmayes Road (B177) is where every test begins and ends. Shopfront parking, high pedestrian footfall and cars pulling out without much warning. Slow, deliberate observation is the whole game on this stretch.
The A118 High Road gives you buses, box junctions and bus lanes in quick succession. The bus lanes are the single biggest avoidable fault at this centre. Enter one during its hours of operation and it is a serious fault, whatever else you did well.
Green Lane and Barley Lane carry heavy commuter traffic and feed into the Barley Lane roundabout, a multi-lane, signal-controlled junction that punishes late lane choice. We work on picking your lane early here, not at the give-way line.
A12 Eastern Avenue is the dual carriageway section. Confident merging, mirror discipline before every lane change, and holding a steady 50 rather than creeping up to it.
Seven Kings, Becontree and Chadwell Heath residential grids are where the manoeuvres happen. Narrow, parked-up, plenty of oncoming traffic. Good for meeting traffic, terrible for guessing.
South Park Drive and Longbridge Road round out the speed-management work, and they connect the whole area back towards Barking and Ilford.

Book early. Goodmayes was already one of the busiest car test centres in the country before Barking closed, and absorbing those candidates has stretched it further. The DVSA recorded a median wait of 21 weeks for a car test at Goodmayes in July 2026, up from under 8 weeks a year earlier.
That is roughly five months. Which means the moment your instructor says you are within striking distance, get the booking in, because your lesson plan can flex around a test date far more easily than the other way round.

Loughton stands out on waiting time, and we prepare learners for those routes too. One honest caveat: a shorter queue at an unfamiliar centre is only a win if you actually get lessons on its roads first. Tell us which centre you have booked and we will build the routes into your remaining hours.

A note on the Goodmayes pass rate
43.7% of car tests at Goodmayes were passed in 2025/26. The national average is 50%, which puts this centre 282nd out of 317 in Great Britain.

It is not that Goodmayes examiners are harsher. Pass rates track the difficulty of the roads and the mix of candidates, and these roads are hard: dense urban traffic, bus lanes, box junctions, multi-lane roundabouts and a dual carriageway, all inside a 26-minute average route. The learners who pass here are the ones who did their hours on these specific roads rather than on quiet estates two miles away. That is the whole argument for learning locally, and it is why we plan lessons around the routes instead of around a generic syllabus.
