Learn to drive in Romford with MS Driving Academy. Our DVSA-approved instructors teach across the Romford area and every lesson is built around one goal: getting you ready for the Hornchurch test centre, where Romford learners take their practical test. Lessons run in manual or automatic, progress is tracked lesson by lesson in our MS Smart Drive app, and the price is on this page, not hidden behind a callback form.
Romford has no shortage of driving schools. It has a shortage of straight answers. The national franchises route you through a call centre and quote you after they’ve got your number. The budget schools compete on headline bundle prices and make it back elsewhere. We do it differently, and the difference is simple to check.
You’re taught by a DVSA-approved instructor (an ADI, personally registered and checked by the DVSA) who plans your learning and stays with you until you pass. No lucky-dip instructor swaps between lessons.
Your test happens at Hornchurch, so your lessons prepare you for Hornchurch: Gallows Corner, Roneo Corner, the A127, and the 20mph stretch through Hornchurch High Street where examiners watch your speed discipline closely.
The MS Smart Drive app logs every lesson, shows which skills are test-ready, and includes a 30-day free theory trial. You’ll never have to guess how close you are.
£35 an hour, £320 for a ten-hour block. That’s the whole price list. Fuel, insurance and the instructor’s time are all in it.
Weekday lessons from 9am to 9pm with pick-up from home, college or work.

The full licence, no restrictions. You’ll start with clutch control on quieter streets, then work up through junctions and roundabouts to the A-roads. Stalling in the Gallows Corner queue is practically a Romford tradition, and our instructors have talked hundreds of learners through it. It stops being scary faster than you think.
No clutch, no gears, no stalls. Everything you’d spend on gear-change practice goes into observation, positioning and planning instead, which is why plenty of learners reach test standard sooner in an automatic. The trade-off: an automatic licence only covers automatic cars. With every electric car being automatic, that trade-off shrinks every year.

Days or a couple of weeks instead of months. We start with an assessment lesson, price the course around the gap between where you are and test standard, and build in focused time on the Hornchurch routes before test day. Best for committed learners who can clear their diary.

Fast-track pass tailored to your pace:
Romford learners sit their practical test at Hornchurch driving test centre, 75 Station Lane, Hornchurch, RM12 6JX, opposite Hornchurch station on the District line.
Here’s the fact worth knowing: Hornchurch’s pass rate was 48.3% in 2024/25, which makes it the strongest of the east London area centres. Goodmayes and Wanstead both sit noticeably lower. If you’re learning in Romford, you’re testing at the right centre.
Two things changed in 2026 that most driving school websites haven’t caught up with:
The routes themselves lean on the roads we teach every week: the A124 Hornchurch Road, the A127 with its changing speed limits, Roneo Corner, the Station Lane level crossing with its yellow box right outside the centre, and the 20mph High Street where creeping to 24 is one of the most common faults. Your lessons will have covered all of it.
On the manoeuvres, slow right down. Most learners rush the reverse because they worry about holding other cars up, and that is when the observations slip. Take your time, keep the car creeping, and give yourself space to look properly.

Included with every lesson. Your instructor logs what you covered and how it went, so the app always shows which skills are test-ready and which need another run. Bookings are managed in the same place, and the 30-day free theory trial helps you clear the theory test early, which is the single biggest thing a learner can do to speed the whole process up.

Some learners come to us straight off a failed test with another school. Some passed a decade ago and haven’t touched a wheel since. Both are normal, and both get the same approach: start where you actually are, on roads that don’t overwhelm, and move up only when you’re ready. Tell us your situation when you book, and if you’d prefer a female instructor, just say so.
I took manual driving lessons in Romford, and I couldn’t be happier with the experience. Mastering clutch control and gear changes felt daunting at first, but my instructor was incredibly patient and broke down every technique step-by-step. They knew all the local test routes around Romford and Hornchurch inside out, which helped me master tough spots like the Gallows Corner roundabout with total confidence. Punctual, professional, and genuinely supportive I passed my test on the first try with only two minor faults. Highly recommend to anyone looking for top-tier manual instruction!
As a nervous beginner, switching to automatic driving lessons in Romford was the best decision I ever made. Not having to worry about stalling or changing gears allowed me to focus entirely on road positioning, mirror checks, and reading traffic. My instructor was wonderfully calm, tailored every lesson to my learning pace, and provided clear, constructive feedback throughout. Pick-ups from home were always right on time, and scheduling around my work shifts was seamless. I passed my test smoothly and now feel 100% safe and confident driving on my own!

The DVSA’s guideline is around 45 hours of professional lessons plus 22 hours of private practice. Beginners often need a little more, experienced learners less. Your instructor will give you an honest estimate after a lesson or two, and the app tracks it from there.
Manual licences cover every car. Automatics are often quicker to learn and all electric cars are automatic, so if that’s your future, it’s a sensible route. We teach both.
